After All, We're Only Human
Mind power. It’s what our society is defined by. Mind power. It’s what society judges us by. Mind power. It’s the power of the individual. Individualism is, “the principle or habit of or belief in independent thought or action” (individualism). The freedom, perspective, values, and ideas an individual holds impacts society. The mind is what gives us the ability to be different from everyone else, making us think unlike everyone else, and act unlike everyone else. The mind is, “an element, part, substance, or process that reasons, thinks, feels, wills, perceives, and judges” (mind). The individual can think inside the box like the rest of the world, or they can be the one to think outside to bring in new ideas and perspectives. In groups, the individual is boxed in with thinkers who may not see eye-to-eye, and therefore will not welcome new ideas. They can be free to make certain choices that set them aside from or above the rest of civilization. With the freedom of the individual’s mind, progress is made, and society becomes more advanced as a whole. An individual most impacts society using the freedom of their mind, bringing to people new perception and concepts through their character.
The individual is a very important role in society. It is true that a person can be influenced by the society and environment in which they live. However, they still maintain control over their own life. They make the choices to be who they are, so they are minimally affected by society. However, a single person has it in themselves to make a huge difference in the world. It can be planting a tree, saving a life, turning in paperwork on time, singing, or painting. Anything. Their actions are what impact society. Their mind holds their thoughts, feelings, will, judgment, and more. Using that, they act. Choices are given, but decisions are theirs to make. Whether it’s supporting a friend in the hospital with a broken leg, or opening a door for a person with their hands full, versus robbing a convenience store. The right choices make the most difference. After all, it’s always the little things in life that give us the best times, and the most precious memories. The individual is the liberator (Goldman). As individuals, we can make the world a better place, in many different ways, whether we know it or not. It could be as simple as reusing a plastic bag, or as complex as starting an endangered species protection agency. Our impact of “making the world a better place begins with our choice to do so as individuals. In our decisions on how we act in our world and how we will interact with not only other people, but the environment as well” (McCarney).
Individuality is powerful. Every being a single person meets is influenced, even though they may not know it. Most people don’t realize the importance of a family member, or friend, or co-worker, or a family member of a friend of a co-worker, until that person is gone. An individual’s impacts can be on a daily basis, or every once in a while- with the ideas they bring, the perceptions they share, the actions they take, and the feelings they expose. That is how they make an impression on society. Simply by being themselves and using their minds to touch the lives of other individuals all around them. For example, when voting for a president, the democratic representative has completely different views on certain issues than the republican representative. That is why one wins and the other loses. Their diverse visions for the country gave the winner that edge over the opposing person. Society used those opinions to decide and vote for their new leader. Of course, not everyone agrees with one person, but that is the way society is, and it’s hard to change. “You are essentially who you create yourself to be and all that occurs in your life is the result of your own making,” (Richards). Character is what affects us all. It’s the difference between right and wrong, moral and iniquitous, living and not. The way character is used, is what affects society around an individual. For instance, most people are bystanders when they see a person being bullied or taken advantage of. Very few times does someone stop to help them pick up their books that were knocked over. Everyone else is in their own world, in their own mind, making excuses to themselves on why they can’t help the person for just a minute. However, the few who do bend over to help and ask if they are okay are the people who have the greatest influence in their life and on the rest of the world. Its character. Whether it’s as small as opening a door for a stranger with their hands full, or donating an organ for a patient in need of a transplant, it shows true character. They went out of their way to make a small difference for a bigger issue. In their mind, it was the right thing to do. It could have been that tiny helping hand to be kind, or that generous task which gave a second chance at life. Their character impacted society.
Our feelings also have a colossal effect on society. Our emotions make us human. We care for others. We smile to strangers we pass on the street simply to be friendly. Individuality builds unbreakable bonds of friendship, and friendship can be our greatest influence. Standing beside people in their times of trouble can mean the world to them. Individuality is so important. Being ourselves is the best way to impact society. “Your own gift you can present every moment with the cumulative force of a whole life’s cultivation,” (Emerson). We all have something special to present. “Every man is a unique,” (Emerson). Emotions are one of the best ways to touch the lives of people. For example, many people will ask “how are you” and say “have a good day”, but the times when it’s clear that they really mean it and aren’t just asking come as a surprise because that person actually wants to hear what you have to say. It’s the caring part that touches people. For instance, when a relative of a close friend dies, people often can’t find the right words to say, but sometimes, the silence in the presence of each other is enough to show they care. It gives them support and comfort. The mind gives us those passions to share with the ones we love, and the ones we meet. Kindness, forgiveness, compassion, anger, sadness, frustration, serenity. There are many feelings to experience. They provide us with a way to reach out to other people, and make them happy. Emotions are the easiest way to influence society. Pathos gives people the edge, providing them with a way to relate to society.
Conflicting positions on issues is what creates change. Everyone has a perspective of their own on certain matters. Debates and arguments are the way to reach a compromise. For example, the issue conflict over gay marriage. Some people believe, “marriage is the traditional building block of human society, intended both to unite couples and bring children into the world” (Colson), while others support the separation of church and state because the word marriage is a word “wholly owned by the state, not the church” (Pollitt). This quarrel, of many others, has been a topic of debate for a long time. People are so stuck to their opinions; they refuse to listen to new individuals’ insights. For example, it’s like a story of forbidden love. The father hates the man his daughter loves, and prohibits her form being with him. With a little discussion, and a lot of listening, they views meet eye to eye, and they lovely couple lives happily ever after. Conflict are a part of life, but if the individual wimps out on sharing their insight in certain situation, then there will be no happily ever after for our reality. Pros and cons of a decision are often what allow a choice to be made. In order to get the whole story, an individual needs to share their ideas because they may differ from the remainder of the group. An individual can offer a new outlook on discussions, essentially changing the views of the heated arguers, and for this little Romeo, it worked out to his advantage.
It takes a very outgoing individual to stand up to a group of people and fight for what they believe in, but that is often the best way to distribute their ideas. Speaking before an audience is how ideas are shared. An individual would have a different idea than their neighbor. If no one told their thoughts on the subject, progress wouldn’t be made. Not everyone agrees with the ideas an individual possesses, but by fighting for it, the idea is posed. Thomas Jefferson made it clear that in order to achieve independence from Great Britain, they must fight an inevitable war. Speaking about ideas on certain issues is the only way for them to be heard. Martin Luther King Jr. convinced the blacks to stand up for their rights. That they are not treated as the equals they should be. Also, ideas are what push our country into the future, and a better one. With new safety controls, and medical treatments, and law enforcement, and computers, our future is secure. But we can’t stop there. There is always room for improvement. It starts with an idea from the bold mind of an individual. Way back when the first phone was invented, Alexander Graham Bell impacted our society today. He started a chain of ideas. Or, Florence Nightingale, who improved hospitals’ hygiene. These important individuals, like Thomas Jefferson, Martin Luther King, Alexander Graham Bell, Florence Nightingale, and many, many others impacted not only the society they lived in, but helped to create what our society is today. It is an independent, equal, clean, influenced country (Gorn).
We, as individuals, can use our minds to make the smart choices. Use the freedom, the judgment, the ideas, and the feelings. If everyone was the same in making decisions, where would we be? We'd be where humanity started. Individualism brought new ideas such as agriculture in the Neolithic period, or expansion when Columbus arrived, or cars, or cell phones, or any other invention that was a turning point in our history. No one would have thought of new ideas if we were all the same. As individuals in the world, it’s our job to be ourselves. That’s the way we impact society. Our mind provides us with the freedom of ideas, and feelings, and thoughts, and perceptions, and choices, and the ability make a difference. We offer many things that come from our minds, and it comes from only the one who thinks of it. Like snowflakes, no one is exactly alike, even twins develop varying characteristics. So, how can we all think alike? We don’t. “Big tree” can mean a multitude of things, one person imagines a giant maple tree, another person pictures a peaceful willow tree, and another person sees a dark pine tree in their mind. We all have a different approach. But the one way a person impacts society is their way. Not by any other method. Besides, “who would you be but yourself?” (Brooks). An individual’s impact on society comes from them, and that begins with the power of their mind.
